Orthognathic Surgery in Dubai UAE
Orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, is a procedure that corrects irregularities of the jaw that can impact its proper function and the appearance of the face. Individuals may require the operation if they have a misaligned jaw that cannot be corrected through orthodontic treatment. At Precision Dental Clinic, we work along with specialist Surgeons to provide jaw realignment surgery for patients to improve their daily lives.
Reasons for orthognathic surgery
The jaw is responsible for many functions, playing a role in your speech, your ability to bite and chew, breathing, and facial contours. Whether you were born with a misaligned jaw or suffered from an injury that caused it, correcting it is important to improve function. Individuals who have jaw related problems may have difficulty eating, talking, sleeping, and breathing. Jaw surgery may be recommended in the following scenarios:
- Improve biting and chewing functionality
- Correct issues with speech
- To minimize worn down teeth
- To improve facial symmetry
- Correct congenital defects
- Relieve TMJ pain
- Alleviate unexplained headaches or neck pain
- Repair facial injury
- Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea
What to expect with orthognathic surgery
Our team at Precision Dental Clinic will perform a thorough consultation to assess the jaw, which includes any necessary x-rays or digital images. From there, we will be able to determine the recommended surgical treatment to correct your specific issues.
Corrective jaw surgery is typically performed inside of the mouth which means there are often no scars. In some cases, it may be necessary for tiny incisions outside the mouth. Orthognathic surgery can be performed on the upper jaw, the lower jaw or a combination of both. Once the dentist has realigned the jaw, it will be secured in place with wires and screws to maintain the new position. Following the surgery, patients may experience some pain and swelling for several days that can be controlled with either prescription or over the counter pain medications. The treatment will usually involve an initial course of orthodontic treatment, followed by the jaw surgery (while the braces are still on). The orthodontic treatment will have to be continued after surgery as well to fine tune to position of the teeth. Following the surgery, patients should expect to switch to a liquid or soft diet for about 4-6 weeks to aid in healing.
