Issues Invisalign can treat

Invisalign is a great option for patients who have mild to moderate issues they want to correct with their teeth, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

In addition, Invisalign can be used to correct issues with your bite, relieving pain, uneven wear and tear on your teeth, and other symptoms of a misaligned bite. For example, Invisalign for overbite can help bring your lower jaw forward into better alignment with your top jaw, and Invisalign for crossbite can help shift your teeth and jaw so that they properly bite together.

It is important to note that some issues, such as more severe cases of misalignment, crowding, or bite problems, are better corrected with more traditional orthodontic appliances. Our highly skilled and experienced orthodontist performs a complete evaluation and consultation with you to determine the best treatment plan for your needs.

A great option for these patients is Invisalign braces. It is a system that uses clear, transparent, removable plastic sheets that fit over the teeth.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

The biggest advantage of Invisalign is that it is almost invisible. So, someone speaking to you would not know that you have braces on or you have something that is straightening your teeth.

They are also removable and have no diet restrictions. A person wearing Invisalign can eat pretty much whatever they like.

It is much easier to clean the teeth. Brushing and flossing, as usual, is possible with Invisalign.

Who is an ideal candidate for Invisalign?

The best kind of candidates for Invisalign are people who want to get the teeth straightened, but they are too embarrassed to wear regular braces.

Invisalign has various options for different types of patients, from teenagers to adults and now, for younger kids as well.

The Invisalign process

Invisalign works like invisible braces for your teeth. After taking impressions of your teeth and using computer software to plan out your treatment, the Invisalign laboratory custom-creates clear, BPA-free plastic aligners that shift your teeth into their optimal position. Every one to two weeks, you switch out your aligners for the next set, making sure to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day for the best results. Patients love Invisalign because not only are the aligners comfortable, but they are also fully removable. This means you can take out the aligners to eat and drink your favorite foods and beverages without worry, and oral hygiene is unhindered by brackets and wires, so your teeth and gums don’t suffer.

Are you someone who is interested in using Invisalign® to straighten your teeth? In this video, Dr. Punit Thawani explains the first step to start your journey with Invisalign®.

Frequently Asked Questions with Dr. Punit Thawani

What is the first step to start Invisalign®?

Your first step to start with the Invisalign® system is to have a consultation where I would look at your teeth, and we would figure out the best way for you to correct your smile.

Once we decide how to move forward, a special set of measurements are taken of your teeth and sent to Invisalign®.

They create a three-dimensional virtual model of your teeth and stimulate the entire treatment on the computer.

This means that before we even start to put any movement or any pressure on your teeth, we will be able to see the entire treatment process from start to finish on the computer.

Once both you and I are happy with the treatment outcome, we can tell Invisalign® to go ahead and start manufacturing the custom-made aligners for your treatment based on our treatment goals.

I will be asking you to come back to see me once in a month or a month and a half to monitor the treatment’s progress and guide you towards your beautiful smile.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The process will be a little different for each person, and it can take anywhere from 6-18 months. Patients typically wear braces for two years, while the average timeframe for Invisalign is half that time.
When worn for the recommended amount of time, Invisalign aligner trays are just as effective as metal braces for many common orthodontic problems. However, patients who don’t wear the trays for the required 22 hours won’t get results as soon.
To shift your teeth and jaw into the optimal position in the expected time frame, you will need to wear the aligner trays for at least 22 hours a day. Patients who only wear the trays for half the day will take at least twice as long to achieve their desired results.
Invisalign trays may crack, bend, or stain if you leave them in while you are eating or drinking anything other than water. You may need to remove your tray during meals and while having drinks or chewing gum. Cleaning your teeth before putting your trays back will help prevent bacteria from collecting.
The treatment cost will depend on the specific issues that need to be addressed and how many aligner trays you will need to use. Invisalign commonly costs more than braces because of the advanced scanning technology used to create images of your teeth, plan your treatment, and craft your aligners.
Dr. Thawani will evaluate your teeth and jaw alignment during your initial consultation and determine if Invisalign is the right treatment for you. Invisalign is suitable for treating gaps, mildly crooked teeth, crowding, and many bite alignment issues. Dr. Thawani may recommend traditional orthodontics for patients with large gaps, severely crooked teeth, or teeth that need to be lowered or raised from the jawline.
The attachments serve as anchors for your trays so they can fit snuggly and deliver the correct amount of pressure to shift your teeth and jaw into place. The attachments are made from composite resin, just like the fillings used in teeth, and they are chosen carefully to match your teeth' natural color. Not all of your teeth will need attachments, and Dr. Thawani will only place them on your front teeth if necessary. They are designed to blend in discreetly, but they may be noticeable if someone is looking directly at your teeth.
The aligner trays are made from thin, clear plastic, and they are far more discrete than traditional braces. While they aren’t totally invisible, most people won’t notice them during casual conversations.
Just like any oral appliance, it will take you a few days to get used to it. Patients may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity within the first couple of days, but it should pass, and you shouldn’t experience any pain.
Dr. Punit will need to evaluate your teeth every six weeks to ensure you are progressing as expected. In some cases, he may need to adjust your aligners for better tooth and jaw placement. These visits are typically over in 15 minutes, though they can take up to 30 minutes if you need to make adjustments.
Patients will typically need 20-30 aligner trays, and each one is worn for about two weeks. While the initial trays will be created at the same time, Dr. Thawani may need to make some adjustments as you progress, so it’s best to take them in batches to ensure you don’t move your teeth into the wrong position.
Yes, you should wear a retainer after Invisalign treatment to keep your teeth in place, but the retainer will not be much different than your trays. As your jaw adjusts to the new placement, you won’t have to wear your retainer as often.
The best treatment for each patient depends on several factors. Invisalign is popular because it is discrete, and you can eat all of your favorite foods without worry. Invisalign makes it much easier to care for your teeth and prevent decay. Braces may be better for patients who can’t commit to leaving their trays in. Some cases of dental crowding or malocclusion are too severe for Invisalign to treat and require braces.
Invisalign is suitable for kids as soon as they have all of their adult teeth and most adults. There are some extra considerations for patients with dental implants or crowns and other restorations, but in these cases, Invisalign is often preferable to traditional orthodontics.
