Effective gum disease treatment is available in Dubai, UAE

Do your gums look swollen or inflamed? Have you noticed some bleeding when you brush your teeth? While you may not think these symptoms are a big issue, they are all early signs of gum disease, a condition that is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. Without treatment, gum disease will continue to progress, not only negatively impacting your oral health, but also increasing the risk of other health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and strokes. Luckily, the team at Precision Dental Clinic is experienced in providing comprehensive gum disease treatment to improve your health.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue that holds your teeth in place. Most commonly caused by inadequate oral hygiene, gum disease occurs when plaque buildups on the teeth and hardens. In its first stage, known as gingivitis, the gums are typically irritated, but the teeth are still secure in the sockets and no irreversible bone or tissue damage has occurred. Symptoms may include bleeding or swollen gums and halitosis (chronic bad breath). When gingivitis is not addressed, it will advance to periodontitis, which is a severe infection of the gum tissue. Individuals with periodontitis will notice gum tissue pulling away from the teeth and forming pockets, as well as loose or shifting teeth.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease or in dental terms periodontitis is something that affects your gums. It is a silent disease. You will hardly experience pain, but it has devastating effects on your oral health.

What causes gum disease?

Many factors can cause gum disease. The most important being the local deposits that develop in your mouth, as long as you are alive. A regular dental checkup with your dentist is recommended to diagnose if you are suffering from gum disease.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

Symptoms of gum disease are:

  • Bleeding gums every time you brush teeth
  • Swelling in gums
  • Discomfort or the need to constantly clean teeth
  • Itching gums
  • Spaces developing between teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Shift in bite

Treatment for gum disease

Treatment options for gum disease differ depending on the symptoms and severity of the condition. In all cases of gum disease, it’s important to dramatically improve oral hygiene at home in order to eliminate harmful bacteria and prevent plaque buildup. Other treatments may include:

  • Scaling and root planing – This professional deep cleaning targets the periodontal pockets to remove plaque, bacteria and other toxins and then smooths out the rough areas on the root surface to prevent future accumulation under the gum line.
  • Medications – Topical or oral antibiotics may be recommended to address the infection.
  • Periodontal surgery – Can be used to strengthen damaged bone and gum tissue and reducing periodontal pockets.
  • Dental restorations – If you have experienced tooth decay, gum recession, or missing teeth as a result of gum disease, further dental restorations may be necessary once the gum disease has been addressed.

The most important thing you can do for your gum health is to practice good oral hygiene techniques including brushing twice daily and flossing every day. It’s also important to maintain routine dental visits so any signs of gum disease can be caught early. Additionally, our annual savings plan is an excellent way to reduce your chance of developing gum disease. Click here to learn more.

Smokers and gum disease

Watch Specialist Periodontist, Dr. Shweta Prabhu's recommendations for smokers to prevent gum disease
Video Transcript

Hi everybody this video was made specifically for all the smokers in the house and we know that there are lots. I know you know that smoking is not good for us and we must stop smoking but there are a lot of us who keep trying and who just can’t stop. So today I want to just quickly run through what you can do to look after your gums in specific because you know smoking is a very big risk factor for gum disease. Now the problem when we smoke what happens over a period of time is that the diameter if the blood vessels reduces in size. When it reduces in size it is not able to clean all the chemicals that are being infused into your tissues. When this happens, what happens? There is a masking of the inflammation or the disease process from the outside. So smokers very rarely will have bleeding gums, very rarely. Now when you don’t have bleeding gums you think your gums are good but underneath there is a lot of tissue destruction going on. So what I recommend all my patients who are smokers is A – of course give up smoking, B – if you can’t at least reduce the number of cigarettes that you smoke, C – visit your dentist regularly more regularly than the other people, I would recommend a 3 to 4 month visit from regular cleanings and looking after your gums, and along with that this message is applicable for people who smoke in any form, it could be e cigarettes, it could be vaping, it could be regular cigarettes, shisha – so this is applicable to all of us us. And remember along with looking after yourself, reducing cigarettes, brush floss rinse repeat!

Gum disease and diabetes control

Dr. Shweta Prabhu explains the impact of Gum Disease on your Diabetes control
Video Transcript

Last time we spoke about how diabetes is an important risk factor for developing gum disease. Today, I would like to throw light on something that is slightly more interesting is that if you have gum disease, could it affect your diabetes control? And the answer is yes, my friends. It could like any other chronic infection that is present in your body, or any chronic inflammatory process like arthritis or any of these, it depletes the body’s resources to fight a particular problem that it already has. So, if we have diabetes and along with that, we have another problem that is taking away the body’s resources, then it will affect your diabetes control. So, if you have diabetes, make sure you visit the dentist along with your endocrinologist to look after your gums, so you have better diabetes control. Until then don’t forget to brush floss rinse repeat.
